The 18 hole Reay Links Gold Course is within walking distance of the house. The course founded originally in 1893 by Thomas Pilkington of Sandside House.

There is a wide variety of routes available for the Rambler in Caithness. Directly from the house itself several interesting routes are accessible.

Beinn Ratha

A 3-4 hour walk from the house ( bring your boots! ). culminating in outstanding views of the surrounding countyside.

Sandside Headlands

Within 1.5km of the house, lying just along the coast from Sandside Harbour. The more adventurous guests can continue all the way along the coast to Melvich Bay

The Robbers Cave

On the east side of little Beinn Ratha there is a shallow cave known as The Robbers Cave which is well worth a visit.

Fishing

Caithness is renowned for wild brown trout fishing with over 100 trout lochs available. Loch Calder and Loch Watten being the largest. Permits are available at modest cost. Sea fishing is also very popular with Scrabster and Wick being the main ports. For further information see Caithness Fishing.

Forsinard Flows

A national nature reserve operated by the RSPB. It lies in the heart of the flow country a large expanse of peat bog and wetland, designated as of international importance.

Old Pultney Distillery

One of Scotland’s most northerly mainland distilleries, it has been characterised by a spirit of endurance down the centuries.

Rock Rose Gin

Visit the Dunnet Bay Distillers if you fancy a tipple tasting session. Home of Rock Rose Gin and Holy Grass Vodka, tours are available.

Castle of Mey

The Castle of Mey is the former home of the late Queen Mother and is one of the most popular local visitor attractions withing Caithness. One of the more recognisable visitors is HRH Prince Charles, who visits his late grandmothers home at least once every year around August. Castle of Mey is a must do visit if staying in Caithness.

The Orkney Isles

The Orkney Isles

Visible across the Pentland Firth from the upper lawn on the east side of the house. The Isles are rich in prehistoric sites - part of mainland orkney has been declared a World Heritage Site. Skara Brea a stone build Neolithic settlement on the west mainland has Unesco World Heritage Site status. Day trips are readily accessible from Sandside at Scrabster, Gills Bay and John o’Groats.
